Introduction

The Musée culturel du Mont-Carmel offers a unique opportunity to enjoy one of the most diverse and extensive collections of Acadian and Québecois artifacts and furniture in the United States. Our collection also includes religious artifacts and vestments, folk textiles and artifacts, religious and secular documents, traditional music, folk art, historic photographs, prints, oral history audiotapes, and decorative arts. Almost the entire collection is local, representing a 100-mile radius from Madawaska, Maine, including New Brunswick and Québec.

We also have an extensive library of local history and culture, including books about the Catholic religion dating to the mid-17th century. The museum, a decommissioned Roman Catholic Church, is also considered part of our collection. Built in 1910, it is an outstanding example of Baroque architecture, and has been undergoing restoration since 1984.

We are pleased to feature a selection of our collection in this website. To see other items in our collection, visit us during the year by appointment, or from June to September when there is a part-time docent providing guided tours.
